BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Investigators say that a dog belonging to a 9-year-old autistic girl was likely hit by a vehicle and not beaten.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office says a veterinarian examined the dog and found no signs of repeated trauma. The forensic examination indicated that the animal had injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

Authorities also announced on Wednesday that the owner of the dog has been arrested on unrelated charges.

Kelly Nolan and 32-year-old Stacey Lamont Altman were arrested and taken into custody on Friday and taken to the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.

They were both charged with receiving stolen goods and obtaining property under false pretenses and following bond hearings were released the next day. Investigators say Altman, while being arrested at a Gaillard Rd. residence, was found to be in possession of cocaine and subsequently charged with possession of it.

The Sheriff's Office is waiting to interview some witnesses who were reported to have seen someone attempting to abduct the dog from the owner's resident.  Those witnesses are reported to be out of the state right now.
