Brees record: phones overwhelm Superdome antennas

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - When Drew Brees set the NFL passing record, elation became frustration for some New Orleans Saints fans who tried to share the joy with a tweet, text, picture or call.

Will Trufant, who has a 4-G smartphone, tells The Times-Picayune (http://bit.ly/sbFOPY) that cellphone use was spotty even early in the Monday night game. He says he gave up after it took four tries to send a 13-character text message.

Cellphone company and Superdome officials say the growing numberof smartphones is a problem. Superdome management company official Doug Thornton says older antenna towers inside the arena can also be balky. He says a new antenna system should be working for everyone before the BCS Championship game on Jan. 9.
