UAB loses at VCU

(AP) - Freshman Treveon Graham scored a career-high 18 points and Virginia Commonwealth opened the second half on a 14-2 run to take control Tuesday night in a 68-49 victory over Alabama-Birmingham.

The Rams (8-3), who also got 16 points from Juvonte Reddic, won their fifth in row, again using their stifling defense to wear an opponent down. UAB turned the ball over 23 times, including on three consecutive possessions after halftime as VCU scored 11 straight.

The Blazers (2-7) trailed 36-26 at halftime, before making only one of their next 14 shots. The basket, a 3-pointer by Robert Williams, came with just 12 minutes remaining and pulled UAB within 50-31. But it never got close enough to make it interesting.

Ovie Soto led UAB with 10 points, all in the first half, and Cameron Moore, who came in averaging 14.4 points, finished with seven, including the Blazers' first basket.
