DESOTO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Two brothers from DeSoto Parish were arrested on unrelated charges involving timber theft.

Investigators with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry say 53-year-old Jerry Whitaker of Mansfield allegedly did not pay a landowner for more than 100 loads of timber, valued at $112,766. He was hired to log a large tract of timber near Frierson during 2009.

Investigators say Jerry Whitaker's brother, 44-year-old Ricky Whitaker, who lives in Shreveport, allegedly did not pay a landowner for 19 loads of timber, valued at $12,038. Ricky Whitaker was also hired to log a tract of land in Frierson back in 2009.

Both men were charged felony timber theft. Jerry Whitaker's bond was set at $100,000. Ricky Whitaker's bond was set at $30,000.

"I hate to see anyone cheated out of what is rightfully theirs," said Commissioner Mike Strain. "LDAF forestry investigators take forestry-related crimes very seriously and they will seek justice when individuals break the law."
