Hwy 280 reopened after fatal wreck

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Highway 280 was cleared and reopened shortly before noon today after three people were killed and one was injured earlier this morning in a car crash on Highway 280 Eastbound that shut down both sides of the road.

The accident happened right before the Lakeshore Parkway exit in Mountain Brook. According to Mountain Brook Police Captain Grey Haygood, a westbound car crossed the median and struck two eastbound vehicles.

Mountain Brook EMS Battalion Chief Chris Mullins says the call came in around 6:13 a.m. Upon arrival, one victim was dead on the scene and three others were transported to the hospital.  One of those victims died shortly after arriving at the hospital, while another died a few hours later. The fourth was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A Birmingham police officer at the scene says she was traveling eastbound with other units when they saw a huge fireball. They stopped to assist Mountain Brook with the accident. Crews are currently on the scene from Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills and Birmingham.

A Max Bus was slightly clipped in the accident. No one on board was injured nor was there significant damage to the bus.
