Here is what you saw on Good Day Alabama for November 3, 2011:
SWITCHING BANKS - The uproar over new bank fees resulted in a firestorm of protest across the country. November 5 has been designated as Bank Transfer Day by some consumer groups and activists who are encouraging consumers to switch their accounts to smaller community banks and credit unions on that day. Switching banks can be an intimidating process for some consumers. That's why Consumers Union, the advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, has put together a set of tips to help make switching banks safe and easy. Norma Garcia, director of Consumers Union's Financial Services Team, explained what consumers should do if they are unhappy with their bank and interested in switching to a new one.
VICKY TIEL - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DRESS: What I Learned in 40 Years About Men, Women, Sex and Fashion (St. Martin's Press) is by fashion designer Vicky Tiel. Part Hollywood tell-all, part fashion how-to, and part lifestyle handbook for achieving that je ne sais quoi, the book-like Tiel's life-is truly one-of-a-kind and has been featured by the New York Times Styles section, The Wall Street Journal, Women's Wear Daily, People magazine, and Live with Regis & Kelly. Vicky Tiel started as an "it" girl of the 1960s and has had a four decade career designing clothes that make real women look fabulous. Her sexy, fresh hot pants and miniskirts were used by Woody Allen in his first movie, What's New, Pussycat?, her classic design inspired the red dress that transformed Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, and her creations are worn today by stars such as Halle Berry and Kim Kardashian.
Tiel forged her own path, and picked up priceless and hard-earned lessons from the rich and famous along the way. In IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DRESS, you'll get a glimpse of what it's like to be Hollywood royalty (think yachts, tiny dogs, giant pearls and peanut butter sandwiches washed down with Chateau Margaux), discover the seduction secrets of the greats (from Kim Novak to Goldie Hawn to Warren Beatty), take in a little husband-hunting advice, and even learn Sophia Loren's delectable pasta recipe. Tiel will teach you how to dress like a sex symbol, cook like the owner of a French country inn, and seize what you want from the world like an American ingénue. VICKY TIEL began designing clothes forty years ago in Paris and still owns a boutique there. Her couture clothes are carried in Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. Today, Tiel is the longest surviving female designer in Paris.

MARVINS - Tom Lamkin from Marvin's Building Materials and Home Centers showed us how to keep warm this winter. He focuses on heaters for inside the houses this morning. The main types of heaters are gas, either natural gas or propane, and electric. With gas, you can have a vent-free gas wall mount heater, a vent-free gas stove, and a set of vent free gas logs. Vent-free gas heaters are designed to be installed and operated without the addition of a vent or chimney. Since there is no vent or chimney, all heat generated goes directly into the home. These are safe to use in your home and you DO NOT need to leave windows open to let fresh air in. Vent-free heaters burn at a 99.9% efficiency. Vent-free heaters actually put off less carbon monoxide than cigarette smoke or the gas stove in your kitchen. Furthermore, these heaters come with an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) that will shut off a heater if the Oxygen level falls below 18%. Normal oxygen levels in a room are 21%.
A gas wall mount heater, which can be mounted on a wall or you can buy a small base for it to sit on, comes in either infrared or blue flame heating systems and come either with or without thermostats. Infrared is what most people are familiar with. Infrared also are called plaque heaters. Infrared heaters heat like the sun. It gives you instant heat and is good for someone who wants to bring the room temperature up quickly or wants to sit close to the heater and take in the heat. Blue flame heaters heat like a central heat unit. Cool air is drawn in, heated, and then passed on thru the vents at the top. Best choice for someone who has small children as the front grill becomes hot, but shouldn't sizzle to the touch like the infrared unit. Getting a heater with a thermostat is also nice because you can set the heater on the comfort zone you like and it will turn itself on and off to make sure the room temperature stays at the temperature you desire.
