Two Birmingham-area schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2011, a prestigious award that was given to only 304 schools nationwide for the year.
Our Lady of the Valley Catholic and Oak Mountain High School have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools and will both be honored at an awards ceremony Nov. 14-15 in Washinton, D.C.
The honor is given to schools based on the students' high performance rankings or high achievement rankings among students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This year 255 public schools and 49 public schools were given the honorable distinction.
A total of five Alabama schools were chosen for the award, including Barkely Bridge Elementary School in Hartselle, Phillips Preparatory School in Mobile and Thelma Smiley Morris Elementary School in Montgomery.
