Vestavia Hills hosts 9/11 remembrance ceremony

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL (WBRC) - The cities of Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook and Homewood held a "Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony" on Sunday morning to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Firefighters and police officers from all three cities, as well as local officials, attended the ceremony at Vestavia Hills High School which began at 8:30 a.m.

"I can't imagine what was going through their minds," Vestavia Hills Fire Chief James St. John said of the firefighters who responded to the scene of the 9/11 attacks a decade ago.

"I know when anyone raises their hand to be a firefighter or police officer, they're taking a solemn obligation and they may have to lay their lives down, but they knew what they were getting in to and it was a remarkable act that they carried out," St. John said.
