Body of missing Trussville teen found near Madison

The body of missing Trussville teen Michael Smith was found today in the area where he was last seen more than two weeks ago, according to our sister station in Huntsville, WAFF.

Smith had been missing since Aug. 21, when he got into an argument with his father and said he would walk home to Trussville. Smith's mother had dropped him off with his dad earlier that day. He was last seen walking along I-565 in the Madison area.

According to the Trussville Times, Smith spoke with a couple of friends a few hours after he was last seen. His cell phone sent out pings from a nearby tower for the next three days before the signals ended on Aug. 24.

Search dogs helped out in the search on Sunday, Sept. 4, and were able to catch part of his trail before bad weather and darkness forced searchers to stop looking until the weather cleared, reported the Madison Weekly.

A search and rescue team made up of Huntsville and Madison officers found the Smith's body in an area near Highway 65 and Moores Mill Road today around 11:20 a.m.

The Huntsville Police Department is investigating the cause of Smith's death.
