Grants Mill Road bridge opens today By Melynda Schauer | September 6, 2011 at 4:47 PM CDT - Updated June 25 at 9:03 AM Birmingham Mayor William Bell will cut the ribbon on the newly replaced Grants Mill Bridge today at 3 p.m. The bridge has been closed since December 2009 due to safety concerns. Crews have been working since January to widen the two-lane road, stripe the roadway and replace the 74-year-old bridge. The project cost around $1 million to complete. The opening of the bridge will mean a shorter commute for thousands of north Shelby County and East Jefferson County residents who had to use a six mile detour while the bridge was under repair.
