Tuscaloosa police end funeral procession escorts

As of Sept. 2, the Tuscaloosa police department will no longer provide escorts for funeral services.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department released a statement to notify the public of their decision Wednesday morning:

The Tuscaloosa Police Department would like to make the public aware that beginning Friday September 2nd 2011 at 8:00 am we will no longer be doing funeral escorts. Citizens that are leaving a funeral must obey all traffic laws to get to graveside services.

In May, Tuscaloosa police officer Trevor Phillips was killed while escorting a funeral procession on his motorcycle.
