FEMA offers advice on reducing damage from future disasters

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Federal Emergency Management Agency <http://www.fema.gov/> will offer free consultations with FEMA advisers at home improvement and hardware stores in Jefferson and Shelby counties. The advisers will have display tables at area stores from July 25 to July 30.

The advisers will answer questions and offer home improvement tips and proven techniques to prevent and lessen damage from future disasters. Most of the information is geared toward do-it-yourself workers and building contractors, and is available in both English and Spanish.

Also, if you're thinking of building a safe room, literature is available about the best options. Safe rooms built to FEMA specifications have saved thousands of lives.

Advisers will be available at the following stores on Monday from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dates, locations and times are subject to change.
