A tornado touched down in Cullman around 3 p.m., moving through the downtown area and leaving behind significant damage in its wake. The FOX6 Cullman web cam caught the storm live as it ripped through the area before the camera itself went out. Our crew on the scene managed to capture live video and a couple of still shots of the twister as it touched down nearby.
"A huge tornado just tracked through Cullman, I witnessed it with my own eyes," said FOX6 Reporter Ashley Nix over the phone. "Debris was flying everywhere. There is no doubt there's more damage in the county," Nix said.
Nix spoke to the FOX6 studio by phone to report what she had seen so far and said downtown Cullman was a "chaotic situation."
Traffic is at a standstill, trees and power lines are down "everywhere," she said, making most of the roads completely impassable. The Cullman Courthouse has suffered severe damage, as well as the First Federal Bank and First Baptist Church and at least one home.
The funnel cloud passed right over the hospital and there have been some unconfirmed reports of structural damage to the hospital. A few unconfirmed injuries as well as people giving CPR in the streets have been reported, she said.
Crews are already out in full force trying to cope with the damage and have blocked off the entire downtown area.
