Locals excited for new life in Five Points South

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Word that new restaurants may soon be opening in Five Points South has many local business owners and residents excited for the changes.

A Chik-Fil-A is currently being constructed, and the old Mill Restaurant space is expected to have a new tenant very soon. Exactly who is moving in is being kept under wraps, but several rumors have said it will be someone well-known in the local food world.

The fast-food chicken chain has been the catalyst for new business ventures, and many in the area hope it is just the beginning.

"It's definitely a positive for the area because it's a lot of prominent empty spaces waiting or the right retailer," Lauren Cooper with the Birmingham Business Journal said. "I think once that national brand solidified its plans, a lot of other big names started the same in that area."

Fuego Cantina owner Brett MacDonald said he is excited new locations will be coming to the area and welcomes the friendly competition.

"I think that everything coming in is different, so it won't be any direct competition," MacDonald said. "It's only bringing more people to the area so it's a win-win for everybody."
