BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds are likely across Alabama this afternoon.

FOX6 Chief Meteorologist J-P Dice, on the FOX6 Weather Blog, said there is a good chance for severe storms this afternoon.

"It still looks like the primary threat will be damaging winds along the squall line," Dice said. "However, the atmosphere may be able to support a few supercells ahead of the main line capable of producing tornadoes."

Dice offered the following estimated timeline for severe storms Monday:

2-4pm - Western sections of Alabama including Tuscaloosa and Hamilton
4-7pm - Birmingham-Hoover Metro Area and I-65 corridor
7-9pm - Eastern sections including Gadsden and Annstion/Oxford

Dice said with temperatures expected to reach the lower 80s, there will be plenty of insability in the atmosphere.

Several school systems announced Monday morning their plans to close their schools early Monday afternoon. A complete list can be viewed at www.MyFoxClosings.com.

Earlier Monday, the Storm Prediction Center placed parts of the area under a moderate risk of experiencing severe weather.
