Downtown Jasper abuzz for Spring Fling

JASPER, AL (WBRC) - Jasper's merchants are teaming up in an effort to get more people to visit and spend money in downtown.

The Downtown Merchants Association organized an event April 1 called First Friday Spring Fling.

They blocked off streets in downtown, asked store owners to stay open late, and treated shoppers to music. Organizers said they hope to start a tradition of hosting these events on the first Friday of each month.

"Downtown is county seat and there is lots of activity and merchants," said Debbie Young Sanders, chairman of the Downtown Merchants Association. "We want to invite people downtown and revisit us again."

Downtown business owners said they hope the event brings them additional customers, and encourages other new businesses to open in the area.

"We're so fortunate to have a lot of good, loyal customers, but the more the merrier," said Rusty Richardson, the owner of Bernard's Store for Men, "We want everyone to know about downtown Jasper."

Richardson and Young added that they hope this event continues to grow, and they are hoping to add more activities in the future like outdoor movies.
