McNair makes last effort to avoid prison sentence

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - Former Jefferson County Commissioner Chris McNair is making a last ditch attempt to avoid prison time.

Monday, his attorneys must turn over medical records as he tries to show McNair is now too ill to go to prison. Court records report McNair has suffered a stroke and it has affected his mental capacity.

"I just believe that if you look at all the circumstances of all that Chris McNair did for this community in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's—40 years of public service, I think in his fading years that people ought to forgive," McNair's attorney Doug Jones said.

Jones said if the judge refuses to give McNair probation, he will continue to press the U.S. Justice Department and President Obama to commute McNair's sentence.
