Firefighters union backs off lawsuit

A firefighter union lawsuit against the city of Birmingham has been averted Thursday.

Members of International Association of Firefighters 117 have decided to back off filing a federal suit against the state for creating a law which would end a long standing practice of taking union membership dues directly from their paychecks.

A federal appeals court is deciding the same issue involving the Alabama Education Association and a state workers union.

Ray Fitzpatrick, an attorney for the firefighter's union said he's glad Mayor William Bell will continue the payroll deductions until the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta rules in the AEA case.

Meanwhile, a federal judge has already struck down the new law until the case has been settled.
