HealthSouth has plans in the works to build a new rehab hospital near Shelby Baptist somewhere along I-65. The project still needs to be approved by the state health planning department before it moves forward.
The 34 bed facility would provide hospital-level care for severe rehabilitation patients in Shelby and Chilton counties.
"Seventy percent of our patients are Medicare, meaning they're 65 and older. These are stroke patients, patients that suffer some severe trauma, or some severe orthopedic condition. That requires intensive rehabilitation in a hospital-level care," said Andy Ward, vice president of development for HealthSouth.
If approved, the new hospital would bring around 120 full-time and part-time jobs to the area. It could take up to a year for the state to provide the certificate of need required before HealthSouth moves forward with its plans.
