The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, April 5, 2011:
A national budget that's out of control…our mammoth national debt… and what to do about it all is all over television and radio news and talk shows. Congress and the President can't agree on what needs to be funded and what needs to be cut.
While the extent of our debt has grown dramatically in the last couple of years…the problem is as old as government. How many services do we want our government to provide and how do we pay for those services? What is our role in the world and how do we finance that role?
Certainly, it is not as simple as that. We're reminded daily that we're now part of a global economy…a cog in a changing world.
As a result of what has been called the "great recession", many in the private sector have had to make permanent changes in the way business is done…to look at new business models. It has required thoughtfulness, sacrifice and above all creativity.
Our government needs to take a fresh look at the way it does business too. Recently, I was talking with Congressman Spencer Bachus about this issue. He said we'll never get our spending under control solely by cutting some percentage across the board…that in fact, it's time to restructure the federal budget…look at spending item by item…decide what services are essential…and consider what programs might be better run and managed by state government.
I agree with him…if we're going to get out of this mess, we're all going to be affected by the cuts. Our parents and grandparents would counsel us… we can't live in a 20 thousand dollar house with a 10 thousand dollar income. What do you think?
