BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – The Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital is claiming the title when it comes to treating ocular trauma.
As the nation's first and only Level 1 ocular trauma center, nearly 2,200 people from around the world are treated at the hospital.
"We're writing the book on eye trauma here in Birmingham," said Brian Spraberry, CEO of the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital.
Eye trauma is something that Birmingham has placed its stamp on. The American Society of Ocular Trauma is headquartered here, as is the United States Eye Injury Registry and Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education. The Birmingham-based EyeSight Foundation of Alabama and the International Retinal Research Foundation play major roles in funding vision research.
"The presence of so many highly regarded, vision-related organizations, coupled with the resources of the Eye Foundation Hospital and the outstanding ophthalmologists at UAB and within the community set the standard of eye-trauma care for the rest of the world," said Spraberry.
Spraberry adds that the Level 1 designation adds awareness to those in the medical world and among the public about Alabama's world-class eye trauma facility.
