Dozens laid off in state agriculture department

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Several dozen people have been laid off from the Alabama Department of Agriculture, and more layoffs may be coming in that state agency and others in the coming days and weeks.

Brett Hall, spokesman for the Alabama Department of Agriculture, told WSFA-TV Thursday 45 employees in the department had been laid off within the past two weeks. Hall said 17 people were laid off last week and another 28 were laid off this week.

Hall said another 25 layoffs were expected, but he did not know when they may happen.

The layoffs are part of the agency's efforts to cut back on spending. Gov. Bentley announced earlier this year the need to declare proration of at least 15 percent on most state agencies on the current fiscal budget and deeper budget cuts for the next fiscal year beginning October 1.

Layoffs are also expected in other state agencies. Earlier Thursday, Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb told WSFA-TV she expected the state court system would need to layoff more than 140 people as early as next week. She also said furloughs and fewer court days were also likely.
