The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Thursday, March 22, 2011:
Its taken 38 years, but this month the men and women who fought…AND those who died… in the Vietnam War are being honored. The U.S. Senate passed a resolution that designates March 30th as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."
58,000 Americans lost their lives in the Vietnam War and hundreds of thousands more did not receive proper recognition when they returned home from the war.
And now, editorial comments from FOX6 WBRC General Manager, Lou Kirchen.U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, cosponsored a resolution to honor veterans who served in Vietnam by designating March 30th as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."
March 30th marks the anniversary of the day that combat and combat support units withdrew completely from South Vietnam.
Alabamians have always had a high regard for our military members. But we can, and probably should, do more for our nation's war heroes. It is never too late to let them know that our community cares about them.
On March 30th we can do just that.
