Federal judge rules in favor of AEA

BIRMINGHAM (WBRC) - U.S. District Judge Lynwood Smith ruled in favor of members of the Alabama Education Association Friday in their civil suit against the state education system.

Members of the AEA said Alabama Act No. 2010-761 violates their first and 14th amendment rights. The law, which has not yet gone into effect, would prohibit the automatic payroll deduction of union dues for AEA members. The new law would require members to pay their dues directly from their bank account.

Friday's ruling says that defendants, including Governor Robert Bentley and State Superintendent Joseph Morton, must honor employee requests for payroll deductions to the AEA and return amounts that have already been deducted.
