(Birmingham, Al)- High gas prices have many Alabamians taking Spring Break staycations rather than vacations, and that leads to big business at Birmingham area attractions.
According to BirminghamGasPrices.com, the average price per gallon rose three cents last week, bringing the local average to $3.42 a gallon.
Officials at the Birmingham Zoo, McWane Science Center and Vulcan Park said Spring Break week is one of the busiest of the year. At the zoo, families checked out the animals and activities and enjoyed the sunshine. At the McWane Science Center, kids lined up to get their photo taken with the Backyardigans, and to check out all the creatures in the new aquarium.
People agreed there are plenty of things to do in the Magic City, and Spring Break is a chance to check out the attractions and spend time with family.
"We are planning to have a wonderful time with our kids," said Jason Tolbert, "Just get out and see the activities around Birmingham and see what's going on, really."
"We were thinking of going to Atlanta to see the aquarium, but we decided to just stay home," said Susan Drury, "You can avoid the traffic and save some money."
Officials at the zoo, McWane and Vulcan Park said they typically see an increase in the demand for memberships and donations during Spring Break week as well.
