New program offers text messaging help for pregnant women

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Pre-mature births, still births and birth defects are the things every mother wants to avoid during a pregnancy. There are cell phone apps out there that provide helpful information and now women can get text messages.

"Text 4 Baby" is the name of the program. It is an educational service of the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition.

When you sign up, you get about three text messages a week. They provide tips that guide women through the critical lifestyle choices during pregnancy, to make sure their babies are healthy; things like reminders to take prenatal vitamins each day.

Becky Halechko is enrolled and she says it has been useful. "As any pregnant person, you're out there looking for any information you can get. It's just one of those things," said Halechko.

Dr. Joseph Biggio, MD with UAB School of Medicine said, "It's tragic when we see things that if a woman had just gotten the message, that those problems with their baby could have been prevented."

"Text 4 baby" is a national program and Alabama is one of the states with the highest number of women enrolled.  To sign up for the free service go to text4baby.org
