Trussville to buy property to avoid thrift store

TRUSSVILLE, AL (WBRC) - The Trussville City Council voted Tuesday night in favor of a plan to purchase property where a thrift store planned to open, the Trussville Tribune reported.

The newspaper, reporting Tuesday night on its Facebook page, said the council authorized the mayor to execute a contract to purchase the property near downtown. The property includes a building once occupied by Food World which closed its doors last year.

According to the Trussville Tribune, the city will purchase the property for $5.9 million and assume the mortgage of 3.9 mils.

The property owners had planned to allow America's Thrift Stores to occupy the building, but Mayor Gene Melton said the owners agreed to negotiate with the city after a large number of Trussville residents voiced opposition to the plan at the last council meeting.
