Birmingham man arrested in armed robbery

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A Birmingham man has been arrested in connection with the robbery of a store customer at gunpoint.

Birmingham Police, in a statement Thursday afternoon to FOX6 News, said Alphonso Bridges, 24, of Birmingham, had been arrested and charged with robbery.

Officers from the West Precinct were called on Feb. 7 to investigate a robbery in the 5400 block of Jefferson Avenue.  Officers received information that the suspect entered the store and asked a customer if he could change a $50.00 bill. When the customer replied no, the suspect left the business, then waited outside for the customer to leave. When the customer came outside, police said Bridges robbed the customer at gunpoint.

Following the release and airing of surveillance photos, the suspect surrendered at the West Precinct on Tuesday, February 15, 2011.

Bridges was being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $60,000 bond.
