Federal budget cuts could end pediatrician training program

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - If President Obama's new budget proposal passes, Children's Hospital in Birmingham will lose five and a half million dollars from the budget used to train pediatricians. UAB and Children's Hospital train about 70 percent of Alabama's pediatricians, and the cuts would come at great cost to the program, says Children's Hospital CEO Tom Shufflebarger.

"The problem would be in the long run. We're not training the folks in the long run to meet the current short fall and the growing demand in pediatric care," Shufflebarger said.

"We're talking about health care reform. We've got to make sure that we have providers to take care of those children. There are currently shortages in Alabama," he continued.

Obama's proposal would also cut millions of dollars that currently help low-income Alabamians pay their winter heating bills.
