New audit proposed for Cooper Green Hospital

By Alan Collins

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Jefferson County Commissioners are looking to put Cooper Green Mercy Hospital under the microscope.

Next week Commissioners will vote on paying Birmingham auditing firm Warren, Averett, Kimbrough and Marino $50,000 to check the county hospital's financial dealings.

The announcement came Tuesday after county commissioners said they were dismayed to learn the hospital paid a pharmaceutical supply company $8 million during the last three years without a contract.

"It's pattern and practice of the county to deal in that way we are looking at every contract, both purchasing contracts and personal contracts to make sure the county is getting it's money's worth," Jefferson Co. Commissioner Jimmie Stephens said.

Commissioners said taxpayer's money should not be spent without a contract.
