HOMEWOOD, AL (WBRC) - It is art or a sign? In the end, it turns out it doesn't matter. The Homewood City Council decided to allow the "You Are Beautiful" sign on a dry cleaner's wall to be finished, but only if it's scaled down to 1/8th its current size.
Monday, the council voted to give the business a variance that will allow the sign to be finished but only if the anonymous artists behind the project start over and make it 50 square feet or less.
Right now the sign would be at least 400 square feet if completed. The request to allow it to continue as-is was voted down.
"I will spring for the paint and I will even spring for the variance fee if the artist chooses to complete the work at 50 square feet," said Mark DiChiara, owner of the business where the sign is half-completed. "If he chooses not to, I totally understand why he wouldn't want to put his message up in Homewood anymore after this experience."
The artists behind this sign told FOX6 NEWS last week that they planned to stop working on this project because of the controversy no matter what the council decided.
The business owner said he has had several other artists volunteer to step in if he asks them to.
