A state trooper and an 18-wheeler collided on I-459 North near the I-65 interchange after both vehicles hit a frozen patch of pavement. The 18 wheeler struck the state trooper's vehicle twice in the accident, but no one was injured.
Another group of wrecks occurred on the icy Galleria Blvd flyover. Eye witnesses told Fox 6 that after an initial crash between two vehicles near the inside wall of the ramp, at least two more cars wrecked as a result. No serious injuries have been reported so far.
Cars were sliding over the roadway on Highway 31 near Brookwood Hospital. Police were on the scene making sure that only one car could pass at a time.
Cpl. Steve Smith with the Alabama State Troopers told Fox 6 that wrecks have popped up in several areas, espeically near the I-459/I-20 interchange. He said bridges and overpasses continue to be the most hazardous spots.
Smith urges drivers who are in accidents to be patient in waiting for troopers to arrive on the scene. If it's safe and your car is drivable, move it out of the roadway.
