TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - Hundreds of veterans from the Tuscaloosa area participated in the VA's first "Recovery Celebration" Wednesday. The veterans were recognized for reaching various milestones in mental health recovery, including anxiety problems and more severe issues.
As part of the celebration, the vets were given coins that signified the number of years they participated in recovery and for reaching their goals.
"They recognize being presented a coin because it's actually a military thing," said Damon Stevenson with the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center. "Persons in the military are presented coins for reaching certain achievements while they're on active duty."
The Tuscaloosa vets received coins representing anywhere from one to 30 years of mental health recovery.
