BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - American Idol winner Ruben Studdard helped Mayor William Bell announce the first Ruben Studdard Celebration Weekend and the BHAM Marathon Monday.
The event will take place this coming fall, however an exact date has not been set. The race is just one of a series of events that will benefit the Ruben Studdard Foundation for the Advancement of Children in the Music Arts.
"The event weekend will make a great economic impact on the city and help support all the kids benefiting from the great work of the Ruben Studdard Foundation," Bell said in a release.
Ruben says running has become a big part of his health and wellness plan, as his native city has always been.
"The City of Birmingham has always been an important part of me becoming the person I am today," Studdard said. "I'm looking forward to being a part of something so exciting that helps the city and the kids who benefit from the foundation."
Several of Studdard's famous friends are expected to attend the weekend, which will include a benefit concert, running expo and meet and greet opportunities with the "Velvet Teddy Bear," as well as other celebrities.
The event will include both a full and half marathons, and are set to start and finish at Railroad Park downtown.
