Sheriff Hale a no-show for budget hearings

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale did not meet Friday morning with county commissioners to discuss budget cuts.

County commissioners were holding hearings this week to look for ways to save money. They had asked Hale to come Friday morning, but he did not appear. Hale had a scheduling conflict and plans to meet with the commission in the future.

In addition, Capt. Marsha Allen did not present a budget to commissioners.

Commissioner Jimmie Stephens read an email from Deputy Chief Randy Christian saying the sheriff's budget had been cut $10 million since 2009 and that the sheriff doesn't plan to cut more.

Christian says the sheriff's office will work with the commission on future budget cuts but doesn't know where they can find additional money at the current time to open the Bessmer jail. Opening the jail is estimated to cost $4 million.

Commissioner Jimmie Stephens would like to see the sheriff's office and the commisison possibly split the cost, and would like to see the jail open this spring.
