TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - Tuscaloosa police arrest a man after he allegedly broke into two condos. In one case, he's accused of trying to rape a woman. The attacks happened at Crimson Place Condominiums on 13th Street East.
The victims are ages 19 and 20 and both attend the University of Alabama.
In both alleged attacks, the women put up a fight. Police say it's evident in the mug shot of the suspect.
He has a swollen black eye and scratches.
Yuni Gonzalez, 20, took some solid blows to the face. Both of his victims fought and fled.
Captain Phil Simpson with the Tuscaloosa Police Dept says around 3am Thursday morning, the suspect broke into a condo at Crimson Place Condominiums. The UA student got out of the shower and saw the suspect in her condo. She screamed at him to leave and before punching him several times.
He then left and went to another condo, where the door was unlocked. The victim was asleep at the time. Police say Gonzalez sexually assaulted her. She was able to get away and call police.
"In both of these cases they vigorously defended themselves and prevented this crime from being much worse than it was," said Captain Phil Simpson. "They did physically fight with him to get away from him and defend themselves. And the mug shot shows they were successful."
Surveillance video at the complex helped police identify Gonzalez and track him down. He was arrested nearby at his home.
Knowing he's off the streets makes their neighbor, Kelsey Johnson, feel safe. But this scary incident has her more aware. She'll take time to make her doors are locked.
"Normally we always lock it at night. Now, we'll be a lot better about locking in the day as well," said Johnson.
Gonzalez has been charged with two counts of burglary and will soon be charged with attempted rape. He's being held on a $90,000 bond.
Captain Simpson says he was under the influence of alcohol when all of this happened.
