BIRMINGHAM (WBRC) - Crews plan to break ground on the new Westin hotel in downtown Birmingham January 24.
Birmingham Mayor William Bell made the announcement in front of community and corporate leaders Friday. Bell also discussed the impact the hotel will have on a planned downtown entertainment district.
Extra hotel rooms will hopefully attract bigger and better conferences and meetings to the nearby BJCC, Bell said.
"When you couple with what we have at the Sheraton and the Tutwiler, in addition with 300 that will come with the Westin, that puts us in that range that we can immediately go in that range to go after 1,000 rooms or more," Bell said.
