Alabama wakes up to white Christmas

Cullman, Ala. (Dec. 25, 2010, Cullman, Ala. (Dec. 25, 2010,

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - People across north Alabama woke up Christmas morning to find more than presents under their Christmas trees... they also found snow.

Snow began falling just before sunrise Saturday in northwest Alabama and quickly spread east across the northern portion of the state.  People as far south as Montevallo reported seeing snow flakes. Snow was accumulating in many areas around the Birmingham area, especially in locations north of Interstate 20.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for people living north of Cullman and a Winter Weather Advisory for people living south of Cullman and north of Montgomery.  Forecasters said people living in and around Birmingham could have up to two inches of snow accumulate. If that happens, it would mark the first time since the National Weather Service began keeping records nearly 100 years ago in Birmingham that more than a dusting of snow fell on Christmas Day in Birmingham.
