SHELBY COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - By Sherea Harris
SHELBY COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - You still have time to help an animal this holiday season. The Shelby County Humane Society is extending a fundraiser that saves the lives of hundreds of its homeless dogs.
The dogs have been at the shelter for several months and some could be euthanized because the shelter is over populated.
Jennifer Miller, a volunteer with the humane society, said, "We get about 6,500 animals a year. As you can tell our facility can't hold that. To be honest with you we can't adopt our way out of this problem because we don't have enough people adopting."
So far, $10,000 has been raised through a Christmas ornament sale.
The money raised helps transport the dogs to shelters in New Hampshire where there's a need for adoptive animals.
Dog Days of Birmingham is a new location where the ornaments are being sold.
"When you see those beautiful dogs and understand what's happening, people are opening their hearts," said Jimmy Johnson, co-owner of Dog Days of Birmingham.
"This really gets the animals out of our shelter and up to shelters in New Hampshire where they are adopted within a week of arrival," said Miller. "So this really gives them a second chance."
The fundraiser is extended until January 1st.
Whole Foods, Dog Days of Birmingham, and Pleasure is All Wine in Pelham are the places you can buy the ornaments.
They can also be purchased online at www.shsornaments.blogspot.com.
