BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - An Alabama man has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence in a car wreck that killed an 8-year-old girl from Kentucky. The victim, Haley Ryan, was traveling with her parents to Alabama to visit her grandmother for Christmas. Ryan's parents, Julie and Rick Ryan, were injured in the wreck.
Alabama state troopers arrested 45-year-old Kenneth Burns of Cullman for DUI following the accident, which occurred on U.S. 31 in Vinemont Friday night around 9:45 p.m. State troopers are continuing a vehicular homicide investigation which could lead to further charges.
The Haley Ryan Memorial Page has been set up on Facebook as a place for friends and family to leave their thoughts and prayers for the Ryan family. It describes the third grader from Tully Elementary School in Louisville, Kentucky as a girl who "loved gymnastics, dance, her brownie troop, being with her friends, her family, and always carried that beautiful smile."
The Fifth-Third Bank is accepting donations to the Hayley Ryan Memorial Fund to help pay for funeral expenses.
According to the memorial page, viewing for Hayley Ryan will be at the Heritage Funeral Home in Cullman from 6 to 8 p.m. Her funeral service will be at Faith Baptist Church Wednesday at 10 a.m. The family plans to have a memorial service in Louisville, Kentucky sometime next Tuesday.
