HOOVER, AL (WBRC) - The Hoover City Council has approved plans for the city to buy the Chateau Apartments on Lorna Road for $2.4 million in hopes of building something new on the site. Mayor Tony Petelos said this is the first step towards bring some new development to the area.
Petelos said the 136 unit apartment complex went into foreclosure in August and is currently only about half capacity. He said the city is planning to honor the leases of all the residents currently living there, and will work to help them find new homes.
Hoover residents agreed the area could use a facelift, and they were happy to see the city moving forward on the project.
"It would be nice if they could build something more upscale to go with what Hoover stands for and the image they hold," said Hoover resident Doreen Smith, "It would do a lot for this area."
Petelos would not specify what plans could be in the works, but said he believes there will be a lot of interest in the site.
"That's a great location. It's on the corner. We feel confident we will have developers and businesses that want to locate in that area to come forward."
The city hopes to begin demolition in six months.
