ALDOT plans to paint over "You are Beautiful" sign

By Melanie Posey

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - You may have seen it as you drove west along Highway 280.  It's the spray painted statement assuring drivers "You Are Beautiful" that hails from the Highland Avenue Bridge.

Well now, it's got to come down. Brian Davis, the third division traffic engineer for ALDOT, says the message is considered graffiti and therefore against the law in the state.  Davis says his department will remove the sign but that it will most likely happen after the holiday. He says there are more pressing road safety issues, such as fixing guardrails and potholes.

Davis also says that the temperatures must be 50 degrees or warmer to apply the graffiti covering product and that lanes will have to be shut down. He says it's best to do that once the holidays are over. Davis also says he's gotten calls from people who want like the sign and want to see it remain.
