Sleet causes slick roads, wrecks

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Rain mixed with sleet caused dozens of wrecks Wednesday morning across north and central Alabama, forcing officials in some locations to close roads.

The rain and sleet mix began before sunrise across west Alabama, then spread across central and east Alabama early Wednesday morning. Temperatures in most locations were very close to 32 degrees which authorities said was allowing the sleet to accumulate on bridges and overpasses.

The Alabama Department of Transportation, on its website, said SR 216 in Tuscaloosa near County Road 36 at Davis Creek Bridge had been closed due to icing. Traffic was being re-routed on local roads.  Bryant Bridge over the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa was also closed for a time Wednesday morning as road crews worked to eliminate icy spots.

In Marion County, law enforcement reported rain freezing on bridges and on roadways, causing numerous accidents on Corridor X. District road crews were sanding bridges and roadways.
