BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - UPDATE: A fire that began in one of the apartments in the Cedar Creek Communities complex in Bessemer spread and set 19 other units ablaze. Authorities say a total of 44 units have been affected by the water and smoke damage from the fire, leaving dozens of familes without a home.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but officials say it appears to be accidental. Neighbors say it could have been cause by food left on a stove.

The Birmingham-Jefferson Red Cross received a call around 2 p.m. from the apartment manager. The Red Cross Disaster Action team responded to the fire at 569 Flint Hill Road in Bessemer.

Fox 6 Reporter Ashley Nix is at the scene. We'll have more details as they become available.
