BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - An accused burglar was dragged by the car police say he was trying to steal on Thursday night. He is now in the hospital and two others are in police custody.
Police say three suspects were involved in the burglary on Fourth Court West in Birmingham. It was around midnight when an officer from the north precinct ran across three men trying to steal a car there.
When the officer saw the men he attempted to stop them. That is when the men decided to try and escape, but things did not go as planned.
Sgt. Johnny Williams with the Birmingham Police Department says one suspect was able to start the vehicle in an attempt to escape. Another tried to enter the vehicle, but was instead dragged around 80 feet after somehow falling under it. The third suspect fled on foot.
All three suspects are in custody. The one who was dragged is in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
During the incident, the officer fired his weapon at the suspects. The ABI is now investigating.
