CULLMAN, AL (WBRC) – The Cullman County Sheriff's Department says they have made three arrests in connection to a homicide investigation into a body found in a burned SUV.
A driver travelling along a Cullman County Road spotted flames from a Chevy Suburban late Saturday night. Firefighters doused the flames and discovered the body of 47-year-old Jerry Allen Martin inside the vehicle.
William Henry Abbot and his sons, William Cecil Abbott and Arnold Andrews Abbott, have been taken into custody. The Sheriff's Department says one of the men was taken into custody in Cullman and the other two were arrested in Morehead City, North Carolina.
Cullman County Sheriff Tyler Roden said the victim and the suspects were related. Martin was the brother-in-law of William Henry Abbott.
Authorities were able to track William Henry Abbott and one of his sons who was a truck driver to North Carolina by using a GPS in the vehicle.
William Henry Abbott has 2nd degree rape and two counts of incest pending against him. The victim in the incest case was Martin's neice. Abbott was charged in June of this year and his trial was coming up next week.
Sheriff Roden told FOX 6 reporter Melanie Posey, "We believe we know what the motive is and that has something to do with the fact he was charged with these sex crimes."
