Expect busy shopping centers for the rest of the year

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -  If you are staying close to home and plan to do shopping, expect heavy traffic near your favorite shopping area.

Beginning Wednesday, extra Birmingham police and security guards will be at The Summit to help things run smoothly. Guards will direct traffic at the main intersection, and police officers will monitor Summit Boulevard using remotes to control traffic signals.

Expect grocery stores to be busy as well. The rush started Tuesday at many area grocery stores.

At the Piggly Wiggly in Mountain Brook, we found folks marking items off their shopping lists. When it comes to the centerpiece of tomorrow's meal, it was a toss up. Some are choosing pre-cooked turkeys. Others are doing it the old-fashion way.

"There is something about the smell he turkey cooking in the house and the excitement of you family anticipation around the table with all the things we wanted to be cook," said shopper Pat Kilpatrick.
