Weaver High students mourning loss of fellow student

ANNISTON, AL (WBRC) - Weaver High School students are returning to school after the death of their junior class president.

17-year-old Cody Watson died in a wreck that happened on Quintard Avenue in Anniston just before midnight Friday. He was pronounced dead on the scene just after midnight.

Watson was a front seat passenger in a Nissan Maxima when it crashed into a traffic light pole at the intersection of Quintard and 12th Street. Witnesses say the car was speeding at the time.

Two passerbys pulled all three teens out of the burning car. The other two were hospitalized but are expected to recover.

Friends of Cody Watson have now erected a memorial at the intersection with flowers and balloons. There are also personal messages and Bible verses.

Weaver High Principal Frances Shippe tells FOX6 News that students are being counseled and they have signed his parking spot and his seat in the cafeteria.

Some of his friends gathered at the scene Saturday night for a candlelight vigil.
