Testimony resumes in two Alabama murder cases

COLUMBIANA, AL (WBRC) - Two high-profile murder trials continue in Alabama on Monday.

Testimony continues in Columbiana in the trial of an Inverness man accused of killing an 11-year-old girl.

Ryan Russell is charged with murdering Katherine Gillespie in 2008. Prosecutors say Gillespie cowered in a corner when Russell held a gun to her head and killed her. They say he then stuffed her body in a trash can.

In Lee County, testimony will resume in the Courtney Lockhart murder trial. He is the man charged with capital murder in the kidnapping and killing of Auburn University freshman Lauren Burke.

Witnesses at the trial last week described Burke trying to run away, but was shot at close range as she jumped from her car, and collapsed on the road before bleeding to death.

Lockhart's attorneys argued that he was mentally troubled after returning from military service in Iraq.
