BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - By Melanie Posey
BIRMINHGAM (WBRC) - A memorial fund has been set up in honor of Nick Bell, a Mississippi State defensive end who lost a brief battle with cancer last week.
Bell had been diagnosed in late September and had undergone surgery in early October. He was to begin chemotherapy this week, but succumbed to the disease Monday, November 1.
His mother, Linda Bell, has now set up a memorial fund in his honor, which she announced Friday at Children's Hospital.
"So he will live. He'll live through this memorial that we've set up as a foundation to raise money for children that already have it, successfully treat them and others, that we'll prevent it and cure this thing, whatever it is they've named synovial sarcoma," Bell said.
Because pediatric tumors are so rare, it's tough to find funding for them, according to Dr. Joseph Pressey, a professor at UAB.
"So we feel very strongly this is a great opportunity to take a tragedy and make something good of it," Pressey said.
If you'd like to donate to the Nick Bell Memorial Fund, you can mail donations to Children's Hospital Foundation at 1600 7th Ave. South in Birmingham, 35233. Or you can do so online www.chsys.org/nickbell. You can also call 205-939-9166.
